What is an Audition Side?
If you’ve ever auditioned for a play or musical, you’ve probably heard the term “side”. But what exactly does it mean?
An audition side is simply a short excerpt from a script used for auditions. It’s a small slice of a larger scene that directors and casting teams use to see how an actor brings a character to life. Sides are usually one to three pages long and give actors just enough material to showcase their choices, instincts, and connection to the text.
In many cases, an audition is the same thing as a cold read. A cold read means you’re seeing the material for the first time, often right before or during the audition. Whether the scene comes from a known show or something brand new, the skill is the same: reading quickly, making clear acting choices, and responding truthfully in the moment.
Working with sides helps actors practice flexibility, quick thinking, and strong storytelling, which are all crucial for successful auditions. You’ll use these skills not only for theatre auditions, but also for film, commercial, and musical theatre opportunities.
Whether you’re new to acting or preparing for professional auditions, understanding sides and how to approach them will make every audition feel a little more familiar - and a lot more fun!
In our upcoming Monologue and Audition Acting Classes for Teens and Pre-Teens, we’ll explore how to approach sides with confidence, make bold choices on the spot, and connect authentically to your scene partner and the text.
